DRAFT PREVIEW - DC Workbook - Task 2 - Summary
leak mitigation / Sinkholes
Multiple issues cause precious water to drain from the Delaware Canal system. This task compiles best practices from Canal managers world-wide; correlates DCNR sinkhole data geographically; estimates volumes / values of water loss; and presents leak monitoring, mitigation and improvement strategies.
The solution is to fundamentally shift emphasis from leak repairs through maintenance budgets to leak prevention through capital investments and watered-prism management protocols - including backup and bypass strategies when repairs are necessary.
This draft Watering History Log is designed to be populated regularly with data by DCNR partners along the 60-mile corridor. Easy data input will document sections of a watered and de-watered prism systematically over time. This model can also visually correlate locations of sinkholes and obstructions in relation to watering conditions. Deployment of this recording device by several dedicated volunteers would provide DCNR with a new tool to graphically illustrate watering history along the entire corridor, pool by pool, over the course of each year. Data collected will be valuable to document conditions and needs for improving sustainable watering and to help justify funding.
